Dorm mold likely to blame

DEAR DR. GOTT: My son lives in a dorm that has obvious signs of mold. He has been sick the entire school year with sinus and throat issues. When he comes home, he is not necessarily better. The “illness” seems to be cyclical. He gets almost healthy and then gets sick again. He is seldom free of these symptoms. He has had a couple rounds of antibiotics with no complete relief. Do you have any suggestions for getting his health back? I have already given him an air purifier and Damp Rid.

DEAR READER: First and foremost, you need to contact his school and inform it of the mold problem. It is the school’s responsibility to have this potentially serious issue resolved.

Mold causes headaches for sister

DEAR DR. GOTT: My sister suffered from headaches for several years. When my brother visited her, he checked around her home and found mold underneath the house. She moved, and the cluster headaches have disappeared. I just thought you would like to let your readers know about this as it may help others who suffer from these awful headaches.

DEAR READER: Mold growth in homes can cause a plethora of symptoms, depending on the type of mold. Most often it is associated with cold-like or allergy-like respiratory symptoms, but headaches are definitely possible.
