Are Alzheimer’s, aluminum really linked?

DEAR DR. GOTT: Would you address the link between aluminum and Alzheimer’s disease? And if there is truly a link, why do deodorants contain it? Thank you.

DEAR DR. GOTT:
Two and a half years ago my parents informed my four siblings and me that we were all to use deodorant without aluminum in order to avoid the buildup of aluminum found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. My family has tried nearly every type of non-aluminum deodorant without success. I once replaced my parents’ liquid deodorant with water for a few days and they didn’t notice any difference!

Now, after several embarrassing summers, we are trying to go back to a normal deodorant that actually works as we have been informed that the Alzheimer’s/aluminum theory is invalid. What are your thoughts on this?

DEAR DR. GOTT:
I recently had a baked potato served to me in a restaurant wrapped in aluminum foil. I also see people wrapping vegetables and meat they have prepared in their own ovens or barbeque grills. Does the aluminum leech into the food? If so, is it toxic to those of us who then eat it?

Please set us all straight.

There was an incident in 1994 that caused about two dozen people to be hospitalized in Texas because of botulism. The cause was traced to baked potatoes held in non-perforated foil for 48 hours at room temperature.

I am unaware that baking a potato in foil will cause any harm. When wrapped foods are placed on a grill, the foil acts as an effective barrier to seal in moisture and the juices from meats and vegetables. [Read more...]
