Daily Column

DEAR DR. GOTT:
When I have a cold, I wear a surgical mask when I am out in public. This causes people to look at me like I’m from Mars and children point at me. Am I wrong or do people need to be educated that this is something they should do?

DEAR READER:
Face masks are common in some areas, especially Asian countries. They are harmless and do help prevent spreading or “catching” viruses. However, the common cold virus can survive for various lengths of time on fabric, metals, wood and more. Most viruses are an annoyance but not harmful; therefore, you probably do not need a surgical mask. Immunity to certain bacteria and viruses is acquired by contracting an illness and your body in turn fighting it off. There is no harm in your habit, but it is not necessary.
